Poker Ride
Lake Selmac Park, Near Grants Pass, Oregon Open to all
horses. Yes, Peruvians too! Back County Horsemen will be having
their annual fundraiser Poker Ride on June 21 at Lake Selmac Park.
Entry fee includes lunch and one poker hand. $10.00. We also will have raffle
tickets on sale for lots of great prizes.
This will be a 10 mile ride through the hills around Lake Selmac (5 miles out
and 5 back), and the views are incredible. Footing is appropriate for a barefoot
horse. There is one water crossing going out and one coming back.
Plenty of parking in a large grassy field. Overnighters can reserve a spot at
the equestrian park on-site. No hook-ups, but water at each corral.
From I-5 coming south: Take the Highway 199 exit at the north end of Grants
Pass. This is the "Crescent City" turn-off. Stay on this road through town. Once
you cross the Rogue River, get into the right lane to make the turn onto the
continuation of Highway 199. Stay on Highway 199 to Selma (about 15 miles).
From I-5 coming north: Take the Highway 199 exit at the south end of Grants
Pass. Stay on the Highway through town and across the Rogue River, and on to
Selma.
The turn-off to Lake Selmac is at the south end of town, with a big overhead
sign and a left turn-out lane. Turn left (east). Stay on roadway past the lake
(about 2 miles), and turn right (south) on McMullen Creek Road, then an
immediate right into the Park. Entrance is marked.
When you see the baseball field on the left, follow the paved road around to the
left to the horse corrals.
If arriving on Saturday morning, there will be parking attendants (on horseback)
directing parking in the baseball field.
First horses out at 10:00; last horses out at 11:00.
Hope some gaited horses will join us.

Peruvian Paso Fun Group and the Grants Pass Group
Mildred Knipes Horse Park, Oakland OR
Lunch at Tollys in Oakland after the ride

It was a long time planning and two groups of equine enthusiast were involved.
Bob and Laurie and their “all gaited ridding group” from Grants Pass and the
PeruvianPasofun group.
Irene and Cris came down the evening before and stayed at TreeTops to make it
easier to get down to Mildred Kanipes in time to ride out at 10:30 am.
We hit the road with the horses and tack all tucked away in their trailer at
9am. I started calling riders to make sure everyone was on their way. Mavis and
Gay arrived early. Dianna and Sue used map search and were still searching the
back hills. So we got them back on track. Thank the Lord for cell phones. We
arrived in Oakland just as the Grants Pass Gang pulled in. Within 5 min. Dianna
and Sue arrived. So off we went. A caravan of 6 or 7 rigs.
The weather was one of those dreamy kinds of days. Clear and sunny, and 84
degrees. Hard to believe just a few days before hand we had rain and in the
50’s. We were the only ones in the park when we started our ride.
We had about 16 riders. Peruvians, Walkers, Paso Finos and mixes.
For some reason, we seemed to split off into three groups, then all one group
and then three again. The pastures were greener then I had ever seen them. We
did have some slippery areas and one horse slipped down on its butt, he got up
and was fine. We went through a lot of forest with trees down from this winter.
Then came across cows. All the horses did very well. Barbara and Laurie took
wonderful pictures.
After an 8 mile ride, Don and I decided we had to get back so we could have
lunch and be at the Luau in time at my mother’s place. Irene and Cris had to get
back to Salem and Marilyn wanted to ride to the rigs with us.
As we were putting the horses back Mavis and her group arrived. Yes they too
wanted to go to Tolly’s. Just as we pulled out of the park, Bob and Laurie’s
group arrived. So 14 of us met at Tolly’s for a fabulous lunch, loads of talking
and laughing. I am sure we sent the other diners out of their sooner then they
had planned.
It was so nice meeting the Grants Pass group. We all had such a wonderful time,
we plan on getting together again this summer.

Hosted by Bob & Laurie James
Gaited Horse Club Event
Perfect Day, Good Friends, Great Time. Who could ask for anything more!
The day began at 10:30am Sunday, October 28th. Eileen P, Stephanie Z, Janet B,
Marilyn H, Harley M, Dena D, Connie E, Charlotte, Linda C, Jeanne W, Barbara E,
Ken W, Jess, & Bob and I. (That's 15 of us.) A special thanks to Carla Rounds
for helping us pull the events together and for taking the pictures of the horse
games/events in our arena. We were so happy with the turn out.
Our trail ride was real nice. It was real hard to return to the ranch because
the temps were in the high 60’s and it was a beautiful ride. Once we arrived at
the ranch we had our lunch in the back pasture near the arena. Bob and I were
nervous as the games were next and we never hosted such an event. We changed the
ride from a 3-4 hour ride, which we usually have, to a shorter ride, plus events
in our arena. It was hunting season and we didn’t want any hunting incidents.
The games began right after lunch around 1:00 pm. We had 7 games total, which
have to be preformed on horseback. Everyone seemed to enjoy them, even the
reluctant ones. The participants entered all of the games except the bareback
dollar bill ride, which had only 2 entries, (myself and Harley).
I won that one. Hey…Hey!
The events ended around 3:30pm and we broke up at 4:00 pm.
After the gaming was over, we asked everyone if they enjoyed the games or should
we move our trail host date to a month that has no hunting or ATV’s? Hands down,
everyone enjoyed the games and look forward to the events next year.
Thanks to all that attended. We enjoyed having you and look forward to riding
with you all again.
